Our Top 6 Reasons for Travel Protection

A group of gravel cyclists pose in front of a rolling landscape

Many travelers think their health insurance or free credit card insurance will completely cover their out of pocket expenses. However, that’s often not the case. Here are our Top 6 Reasons to consider travel protection for your next cycling vacation.

1. You’re Embarking on an Active Adventure

As an active traveler, you’re likely to be active prior to your trip. What happens if you sprain an ankle running, break a leg skiing, or have an accident however minor before your trip that prohibits you from riding a bike? The good news is, your trip cost will likely be covered by travel protection.

2. Healthcare Overseas

We recommend checking with your insurance provider to see if you’ll be covered while traveling overseas. If an injury or sickness happens while you’re traveling, it’s good to know you’ll be covered. In addition to your regular health insurance, travel protection typically offers coverage for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

3. Travel Assistance Services

If something goes wrong during your travels, your trip insurance will provide 24/7 travel assistance service. This service will provide assistance with medical emergencies, lost passports, tickets, and more.

4. Family Trouble

It can be difficult to plan vacations with ill or elderly family members at home. Some policies may even cover family members that are not part of your travel plans.

5. Baggage Protection

No one likes a lost bag. While you wait for your luggage to arrive, trip insurance will pay for the items you’ll need in the meantime. It’s great to know that inconvenience of losing your bag will not cost you more money.

6. Peace of Mind

Traveling can be stressful, and cancelling a vacation can be a nightmare. Having travel protection gives you the peace of mind to know that if something does come up, you will likely be covered.

Please call us at 866-464-8735 to discuss the benefits of trip insurance for your existing or upcoming trip, and learn more about our travel protection plan.

What to know for your first bike trip

A cyclist on an ebike on an open road with rolling hills

Traveling for your first cycling vacation can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Read on for some of our most common guest questions answered from, “What do I pack?” to our top tips for traveling abroad.

“I can’t wait for my trip, but what do I pack?”
We get this question a lot. Which is why we’ve crafted a handy-dandy (and printable!) packing list tailored to what kind of trip you’re taking. Whether it be a luxury week away in Tuscany or a Ride Camp in Texas.

Pro-tip: It’s a great idea to pack your first day’s cycling clothes and riding gear in your carry-on bag so it’s easily accessible should there be any complications with your luggage.

“What safety measures are taken on trips?”
Great rides are safe rides, which is why we take safety seriously. Along with Flare-R front and rear lights included on every bike, we also make WaveCel helmets, Trek’s newest and safest innovation in helmet safety, available to guests on-trip. You can also read some of our cycling safety tips here before you go, and our guides will remind everyone about safety while on-trip.

We have also implemented enhanced standards on our trips to follow CDC guidelines related to COVID-19 safety.

“I have never been to this region before, what will the weather be like while I’m there?”
While we can’t predict all outcomes, you will find a general overview of what weather to expect on every trip page under the “Travel Details” tab.

“How do I know my bike on-trip will be a comfortable fit?”
When you book your trip, our Trip Consultants work with you to determine your size and fit. Bike sizes, measurements, and geometry can vary greatly from brand to brand, so we highly recommend stopping into your local Trek Bicycle shop for help with gathering accurate measurements. On the first day of your trip, your guides will adjust your bike to your comfort and preferences to ensure an excellent fit and are available to make adjustments throughout the week. Learn more about measuring your bike and fit here.

“I love the saddle on my bike at home, can I bring it?”
Absolutely. Although we provide men’s and women’s specific saddles on our trips, we know the most comfortable saddle out there is often the one you’re used to riding at home. Simply bring your saddle along with you and our guides will install it on your Trek Travel bike at the bike fitting before your first ride.

“How do I know where to meet my guides at the start of the trip?”
You can find all the arrival, departure, and meeting details under the “Travel Details” tab on every trip page, as well as recommendations for what to do and where to stay before and after your trip.

“What’s the support like? Do I have to ride all the miles? What happens if I get a flat?”
Your guides are there to accommodate riders of all types and abilities. With a typical Classic trip guide team consisting of one guide on their bike during the day’s route and another sweeping back and forth in the support van, you’re free to ride, sightsee, rest, or shuttle at any part of the route throughout the day. Got a flat or other mechanical issue? Guides will take care of it for you. No need to worry. Please note that support levels vary depending on trip style booked. For self-guided, ride camps, or semi-guided trips, please review your trip details for more information.

“How will I know where I’m going?”
Each bike is equipped with a Garmin Edge 1030 GPS computer pre-loaded with all the route options for the day. Once you select your route, you’ll navigate the route with the help of turn-by-turn directions. You can learn more about our Garmins here. In addition to the Garmin, you’ll have access to the routes on your phone through the Ride with GPS app.

What if I like to ride at a more leisurely pace than the rest of the group?
No need to worry. Each day of your bike tour is yours to discover and explore at your own pace based on what you want to see and do. Most of our vacations include multiple ride options each day to accommodate the different ability levels that regularly occur. Plus, if you feel like you need a boost, you can always reserve an e-bike. They’re a guest favorite and a whole lot of fun.

“Will there be laundry?”
Although laundry is available at many of the properties on our trips, we recommend confirming with your Trip Consultant for your specific trip. It’s also a great idea to pack a small amount of soap or detergent to do a quick kit wash in your room halfway through the trip.

What are your top tips for guests going abroad for the first time?
1. Make sure your passport is valid and you have the appropriate travel documentation. As a general rule, passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally. This means that your passport’s expiration date should be at least six months after your final day of travel. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with your Trip Consultant.

2. Invest in Travel Protection. Sometimes the unexpected happens. Whether it’s lost luggage, a medical emergency, or suddenly being unable to travel. Travel Protection will help mitigate financial loss in the event that things just don’t go as planned. Learn more about our offerings here.

3. Pack a power converter. Plug styles also differ from country to country, so it’s key to pack universal power adaptors and converters while traveling outside of the United States.

Travel in 2021

River front with Mountains in the background

People across the globe are itching to get out and explore the world. But what will travel look like in 2021? Our founder and president, Tania Burke, shares what she’s expecting to see in the travel industry this year and talks about how our team is preparing to show you the world by bike in 2021.

Rocky mountain bike tours with Trek Travel

As I reflect on 2020, I want to thank our entire Trek Travel family of guests, guides, and team for their amazing support during challenging times. We were able to provide experiences of a lifetime to many of our guests. I want to thank you for traveling with us as we adapted and ran different but exceptional, safe trips. Looking forward to 2021, there are many reasons to be hopeful and plenty to get excited about. I thought I would share a few of my thoughts on what travel might look like in 2021.

What to expect in 2021

With the vaccine rollout, I am hopeful that more people will have the opportunity to travel again soon. As things improve, we will see a travel boom because of pent up demand. While I don’t know exactly when that is going to happen, I do know Trek Travel will be ready to welcome you when the time is right. We have been carefully following the news and studying industry trends to get a sense of what travel is going to look like in 2021. Here’s what I am anticipating:

Domestic travel will continue to be hugely popular. North American bookings are the best we have ever seen them as many travelers in 2021 feel most comfortable with a trip closer to home. That may mean driving distance for some or a short domestic flight for others. We saw this trend pick up in 2020, and it is continuing through 2021. As a result, we have added new dates and destinations to our North American trips, and have a few more in the works!

International travel is on the horizon. I am optimistic for travel in Europe starting late spring or early summer, depending on vaccinations and the regulations and requirements from each destination. Our guests are really excited to join us on our European trips, so we anticipate they will sell-out quickly, especially in late August through early October. I recommend that guests booking international trips stay flexible to changing their dates or destination if needed. Our cancellation policy offers the ultimate flexibility, so we can take care of our guests no matter how plans change.

Active travel and bike tours will be one of the most popular ways to travel. You may have heard that there is a “bike boom” happening. One of the unexpected results of the pandemic has been more people rediscovering the joy of outdoor adventures, including biking. I believe we’ll see an influx of new guests who are interested in a cycling vacation for the first time. I am excited to show people new to biking how much fun it is to see the world by bike. To accommodate the wide range of rider levels of these new guests, we have trips designed for every type of rider and offer e-bikes on almost all trips for those who want an extra boost. Wide open spaces, fresh air, and destinations off the beaten path will make active travel a hugely popular choice for 2021.

Travel in small groups or on private trips will surge. We saw an uptick in interest for our Private, Semi-Private, and Custom trips starting in 2020, and as more people start to travel in 2021, we have seen growth in small groups interested in private and semi-private trips. Other guests, who still want to enjoy the commraderie of our group trips, have appreciated that we limit the number of guests on our trips to 20 or fewer, and take an average group of 10 people on a typical trip. In 2021, we’re also seeing an interest in private accommodations and trips that stay at just one hotel. Guests have been particularly excited about our glamping trips, which feature private safari-style tents.

Costa Brava Cycling Vacation Bike Tour in Costa Brava, Spain Biking Costa Brava

Preparing to Travel in 2021

When borders open again and travelers can move safely around the globe, we expect a travel boom. The pandemic has really shown us all the value of human connection and social interaction, so we know people are eager to get back out and connect with one another. We also expect the bike boom will turn into bike travel boom, too.

How Trek Travel is Preparing to Show You the World by Bike
Our team has been working diligently over the last year to monitor the latest recommendations on travel safety, so that we can run trips responsibly.

  1. We have enhanced hygiene standards on all of our trips, which includes deep cleaning all equipment every day. Read more about our safety protocols»
  2. We know that in uncertain times, plan A might not always work out, so we want to make it easy to switch dates or destinations if needed. Our cancellation policy has been upgraded to be more flexible than ever. Learn more»
  3. We have always valued small group travel. Trek Travel trips average 10 guests per trip, with a max of 20. Small group travel allows ultimate flexibility for comfortable distance at meals, route and safety talks, and transports.

Tips for Travel in 2021

  1. Book before the travel boom – To make sure you have the widest availability for dates and destinations, I’d encourage you to book your trip early. You’re also likely to enjoy better deals the earlier you book!
  2. Get excited – Travel, maybe now more than ever, offers the chance to reset, refresh, and rejuvenate. I think we could all use a little of that after the past year. So get excited about your trip! When you join us on a Trek Travel trip in 2021, you will enjoy amazing rides, great guides, and unforgettable meals that will leave you with lifelong memories.
  3. Travel smart – Before hopping in the car or heading to the airport, I’d suggest making sure you’re up to date on the latest recommended safety measures, so you can travel with peace of mind. Checking out the CDC’s COVID-19 travel information is a great place to start. If you have any questions, please give us a call, too!
  4. Stay flexible – Remember that as the world continues changing, your travel plans might need to change too. I suggest carefully reading cancellation policies when booking any travel (flights, hotels, tours, etc.) in 2021, so that you are familiar with when you have to make a decision to change plans if necessary. It also doesn’t hurt to have a backup plan in place from the start. Maybe you plan a European trip but know exactly where you’re headed in the US if the European borders aren’t open by the time you’re looking to travel.

1. Let us score you savings

Save on hotels…

There are a lot of great cost perks to traveling with an established tour operator like Trek Travel, rather than booking on your own. On all of our trips, we rely on years of relationship building with top-tier hotels to carefully negotiate and secure group rates for our rooms. We can leverage significant savings compared to booking on your own. Because of our continued partnership with many hotels, we also receive upgrades and personalized service that exceeds what a typical customer might expect.

Save on meals…

Just like scoring you extra perks on lodging, our restaurant partners go the extra mile to make sure your experience is memorable, without adding to the bill. We receive discounts from our dining partners to ensure that you can enjoy some of the best-rated restaurants in your destination at an unbeatable price. We also book space well in advance for preferred seating and reservation times.

Save on rentals…

When it comes to bike rentals, depending on the model, you can expect to pay around $150 per day for a carbon road bike that is comparable to the models we include on all of our trips. Rental cost is considered without any of the extras we always include, such as a Garmin with pre-loaded, curated routes, a WaveCel helmet, Flare R lights, and a personalized bike fit. Not to mention, on our classic guided trips, you’ll have a guide, who is also a trained mechanic, ready to help with any technical issues that may arise, whether you just need more air in your tires or you need to a flat changed on the side of a road. You will also enjoy van support should you need a break from riding and can count on private transfers between hotels.

Our trip designers research a region extensively as part of the planning process to ensure that we handpick the best cultural elements and activities to show you the unique flair of the region. We get local recommendations and insider info to help us determine routes, activities, meals, and more. Not only do our designers save you money, they save you significant time in planning the painstaking details of a trip.

2. Discover new 4-Day versions of your 6-Day classics

You can now opt for a 4-day version of some of our most popular 6-day guided trips. Our 4-day getaways include exceptional accommodations, guide support, some meals, Trek bikes, and everything else you’ve come to expect from our classic trips, but on average, you can save over $500 per person when you choose a 4-day trip instead of the similar 6-day option.

Online Booking Guide

“This is the largest technology project Trek Travel has ever taken on, and I’m stoked at the user experience our guests can enjoy at anytime from anywhere in the world.”
-Mark, Technology Manager at Trek Travel

The team at Trek Travel is always looking for ways to make the guest experience better, more fun, and easier. Starting in November 2019, even the booking process has been upgraded. Now, guests can simply and efficiently book a trip online! Check out the video above to see how quick and easy the process is.

Why is this a major benefit to guests? We talked to the project lead, Mark, to learn more about the new online booking system.

Why was online booking created?

We realized we wanted to create a great user experience through our website that would allow our guests to book one of our vacations anytime of day. We also want to offer a way for our guests to book their vacations in whatever technology they use most. For a lot of people, that means booking online as it has become such a natural extension of purchasing travel.

How will this make the guest experience better?

With the new system, it means we are able to accept bookings 24/7. That allows guests to schedule a trip when it is most convenient for them, whether that be weekends, evenings, or regular business hours. Along with offering the ability to purchase online, we also built out a customer account center. While still in its infancy in terms of features, this account center gives our guests information on trips they have booked with us, travel information, and more. We also have a road map in place to offer more functionality and features in the future to give our guests the best user experience possible both on and offline.

What should guests expect after they have booked online?

After completing the online booking process, guests will receive a confirmation email and within two days, one of our trip consultants will reach out to verify we have all the necessary information and answer any questions the guest may have. After speaking with a trip consultant, guests will receive a final confirmation for their trip. At any point between booking and trip departure, guests can always reach out to our expert trip consultants to get advice, ask questions, or learn additional information about a trip.

Please note that some select trips are so special they cannot be booked online, but our trip consultants are ready to help. It will be noted on the trip page if a trip cannot be booked online.

Join Trek Travel for a Texas Ride Camp bike tour to Texas Hill Country

Texas Ride Camp

Is it too bold to say that the Texas countryside was actually made for cycling? Well, then let’s be bold, because we think the meandering roads, gentle ascents and bike-friendly rural highways of this super-sized state are begging for two wheels. For decades, Fredericksburg and the surrounding hills have been a revered training ground by anyone that has put rubber to the road. The seemingly endless asphalt around Gillespie County is perfect for Texas-sized mileage, where even short rides can easily go long as way leads on to way. Here you will ride the many roads that pros use for offseason winter miles and good, old-fashioned Southern hospitality. Texas Ride Camp has 4- and 6-day options to suit any rider’s training needs.
