Europe’s Secret Season: Why Spring Is the Best Time to Explore by Bike or on Foot

Spring in Europe is pure magic. The snow melts from mountain peaks, vineyards awaken with new leaves, and wildflowers transform the countryside. Cafés spill onto cobblestone streets, and trails and roads open wide under crisp, blue skies.

It’s a season made for cycling and hiking adventures—mild temperatures, colorful landscapes, and the joy of discovering Europe before the crowds return. From the lavender fields of Provence to the tulip trails of the Netherlands, this is Europe’s best-kept secret: the perfect time for active travel.

And with Trek Travel’s guided cycling and hiking tours, every detail is covered—so you can simply ride, walk, and take it all in.

Why Spring Is the Best Time to Visit Europe

Spring is one of the most rewarding times to visit Europe. You’ll pedal or hike through quiet villages, enjoy early-season hospitality, and see landscapes in full bloom. Average temperatures across southern and central Europe hover around a comfortable 60–75°F —ideal for active vacations.

Culinary travelers will also love the seasonal bounty: wild asparagus, fresh truffles, new olive oil, and early rosé wines. It’s also the best time to experience Europe’s off-season charm, with fewer tourists and more authentic local encounters.

Whether you prefer to cycle France’s Loire Valley, ride stunning Andalusian roads in Spain, or hike Italy’s coastal trails, spring gives you the space—and the scenery—to enjoy Europe at its best.

Top European Trips for Spring

Amsterdam to Bruges Bike Tour – Tulips, Canals & Cobblestones

Pedal from the Netherlands into Belgium on one of Europe’s most beloved cycling routes. Wind past historic windmills, canal-side cafés, and vibrant tulip fields that stretch to the horizon. The cool air and flat terrain make this a springtime favorite for both new and seasoned riders.

Andalucía Bike Tour – Sunshine & Olive Groves

Southern Spain’s rolling hills and whitewashed villages shine brightest in spring. Ride past endless olive orchards, through mountain foothills, and into lively Andalusian towns. With perfect temperatures and wildflowers in bloom, this is Spain’s best cycling season.

Tuscany & Cinque Terre Hiking & Walking Tour – Trails by the Sea

Hike through Tuscany’s rolling hills and into the coastal beauty of Cinque Terre. Spring brings wildflowers and cooler breezes—ideal for long walks between medieval hill towns and seaside villages. Enjoy Italian hospitality, local wines, and unforgettable views of the Ligurian coast.

Rows of Lavender fields in Provence.

Provence Bike Tour – France in Full Bloom

Spring is Provence at its most poetic. Ride beneath limestone cliffs, past olive groves, and through flower-dotted vineyards as the scent of lavender fills the air. The Gorges du Verdon glows in golden light, and the cafés of Gordes and Roussillon come alive again.

Croatia Bike Tour – Adriatic Islands Before the Crowds

Before the summer rush, Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast feels like your own private playground. Ride through olive groves, coastal roads, and ancient towns—then unwind with fresh seafood and sea views. Spring’s mild weather and clear skies make it the perfect time to explore.

Château de Chenonceau and its garden

Loire Valley Bike Tour – Castles, Vineyards & Countryside

Spring paints France’s Loire Valley in bright green and gold. Cycle through vineyards, along riverside paths, and to fairytale châteaux surrounded by blooming gardens. The mild weather makes this the ideal spring cycling destination for those seeking a relaxed yet scenic ride.

Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Trek Travel, LLC and its affiliates collect, use, disclose and protect your personal information when you visit our websites, communicate with us, purchase trips or related services, participate in promotions or otherwise interact with us (together, the “Services”).

This site is owned and operated by Trek Travel, LLC, together with its affiliates including Trek Bicycle Corporation and its subsidiaries (“Trek Travel”, “we”, “us” or “our”).

By using our site or our Services, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this Privacy Policy, please do not use our site or Services.

  1. Who We Are and Scope of This Policy

For visitors located outside the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom (UK) and Switzerland, Trek Travel, LLC, based in the United States, is primarily responsible for your personal information collected through the Services.

For visitors located in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, Trek Travel, LLC is the controller of your personal data in connection with the Services described here. Trek Bicycle Corporation, Electra Bicycle Company, and your local Trek retailer will act as separate controllers for any Trek-related marketing communications they send to you.

This Privacy Policy applies to information we collect:

– On this website and any other websites we operate that link to this Privacy Policy.

– Through your communications with us (for example, by email, phone, post or via online forms).

– When you purchase or participate in Trek Travel trips, services or promotions.

This Privacy Policy does not apply to third-party websites, services or applications that we do not own or control, even if they link to or from our Services.

  1. Information We Collect

We collect two general types of information from users:

  1. Personal data (such as names and email addresses); and
  2. Aggregated and usage data (such as information about traffic patterns on this site and how visitors interact with our Services).

2.1 Personal Data

We collect personal data when you provide information to us. This may include when you:

– Register for electronic newsletters or other membership services;

– Answer surveys or provide feedback;

– Register to bid on items available at an online auction;

– Register for contests and other promotional opportunities;

– Create an account on our site;

– Purchase trips or related services on this site;

– Communicate with us by email, phone, mail or through our online contact forms.

Depending on the interaction, the personal data we collect may include:

– Name;

– Email address;

– Mailing address;

– Daytime phone number and/or mobile number;

– Country of residence;

– Trip preferences and booking details;

– Payment information (such as credit card details, which are used solely for payment processing);

– Account credentials (for example, username and password);

– Communications you send to us, such as emails, letters, or other correspondence.

When you register, request information, or make purchases on this site, we generally need you to provide your name, email address, mailing address, day phone number and credit card information (only when purchasing a trip or related services), as well as create a username and password. In addition, if you send us personal correspondence, such as emails or letters, we may collect such information into a file specific to you.

When you consent to provide your personal information to us, that information is stored in the United States and may also be accessed from other countries as described in the “International Data Transfers” section below.

2.2 Aggregate and Usage Information

Aggregated information, such as which pages users access and information volunteered by users (for example, survey information and/or site registration information), is collected through various methods.

In the course of using our site, we also automatically track certain information about you. This information may include:

– The URL that you came from and the URL you go to next;

– What browser and device you are using;

– Your IP address;

– Date and time of access;

– General location information derived from your IP address;

– How you interact with our site (for example, pages viewed, links clicked, time spent).

An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer whenever you’re surfing the web. Web servers, the computers that “serve up” web pages, automatically identify your computer by its IP address when you request a page from us, and our servers log your IP address.

We do not, as a matter of routine, link IP addresses to anything personally identifiable. As a result, although your session will be logged, you will typically remain anonymous to us. However, IP addresses may be treated as personal data under certain laws (for example, in the EU/UK) and may be used in combination with other information to identify you in limited circumstances (for example, for security, fraud prevention or to comply with legal obligations).

3.3 Google Analytics and Similar Tools

We may use tools such as Google Analytics to help us understand how users interact with our site. These tools use cookies and similar technologies to collect and analyze information about use of the Services and report on activities and trends.

You can typically opt out of Google Analytics by using the tools provided by Google (for example, the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on) or by managing your cookie preferences in our cookie banner or in your browser settings.

– Perform system administration activities and troubleshoot technical issues;

– Customize the content and layout of this site for individual users;

– Monitor, prevent and detect fraud, security incidents and other malicious activities;

4.1 Marketing and Promotional Communications

We may use your personal data to:

– Notify you about updates to this site or our Services;

– Send you promotional offers or opportunities that we believe will be of interest to you;

– Provide you with newsletters and other marketing communications about Trek Travel, Trek Bicycle Corporation, Electra Bicycle Company, and Trek-related products or services.

We will always try to provide you with an opportunity to decline marketing when such information is requested from you online. If you later decide you would rather not receive marketing information, you can:

– Use the unsubscribe link in our marketing emails;

– Change your account preferences on the applicable portion of this site; or

– Email us at newsletter@trektravel.com and clearly state that you wish to unsubscribe from marketing communications.

If you email us at newsletter@trektravel.com requesting an unsubscribe for an email account, the requesting email must come from that particular email address in order to verify that the request is valid and to protect your personal information. If you continue to have issues, respond to the email you received or contact us at newsletter@trektravel.com describing your issue in detail.

4.2 Communications Consent (Marketing Sharing)

Where required by law, we will only send you marketing communications and share your personal information for marketing purposes with your consent.

If you give us your consent:

– You agree that Trek Travel, LLC may collect and use your personal information to send you Trek Travel marketing communications (for example, by email).

– Your data will be transferred to the United States, and Trek Travel, LLC will act as the controller of your data for these purposes.

– You also agree that your personal information may be shared with Trek Bicycle Corporation and Electra Bicycle Company so that they may send you Trek-related communications.

– You also agree that your personal information may be shared with your local Trek retailer so they may contact you with Trek-related communications. Trek retailers may contact you using the contact details you provide, including emails, phone calls, text messages, mail, and WhatsApp communications, where permitted by applicable law and subject to any additional consents that may be required in your country.

You can withdraw any of these consents at any time, for example by:

– Using the unsubscribe link in an email; or

– Contacting Trek Travel using the contact details provided below.

Withdrawal of consent will not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal.

Trek Travel does not sell, trade, or rent personal data to third parties. More information, including details about international data transfers outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, the safeguards used, and your privacy rights, is available in this Privacy Policy.

  1. Legal Bases for Processing (EEA/UK/Switzerland)

Where EU, EEA, UK or Swiss data-protection laws apply, we rely on one or more of the following legal bases to process your personal data:

– Performance of a contract: for example, to process and manage your trip booking, handle payments, and provide customer service.

– Compliance with legal obligations: for example, to comply with accounting, tax or regulatory obligations or to respond to lawful requests from public authorities.

– Legitimate interests: for example, to improve our Services and website, prevent fraud, maintain the security of our systems, and send you service-related communications. We only rely on legitimate interests where they are not overridden by your interests or fundamental rights and freedoms.

– Consent: for example, when you agree to receive marketing communications from Trek Travel, Trek Bicycle Corporation, Electra Bicycle Company or your local Trek retailer, or when we use non-essential cookies and similar technologies. You may withdraw your consent at any time as described in this Privacy Policy.

  1. Disclosure of Collected Information to Third Parties

– Our affiliates (such as Trek Bicycle Corporation and Electra Bicycle Company);

– Our licensees, partners and local Trek retailers;

– Our website hosting providers and other service providers who assist us in operating this site and providing trips or related services (for example, payment processors, IT and security providers, mailing houses, analytics providers).

These parties are permitted to use your personal data only as necessary to provide services to us and are required to protect your information in accordance with applicable law.

We may also share:

– Your personal data with local partners such as hotels, tour operators and transportation providers as reasonably necessary to operate your trip;

– Your data in an aggregated or anonymized format (which does not identify you personally) with third parties for advertising, research or promotional purposes;

– Information as necessary to cooperate with law enforcement inquiries, comply with legal obligations, or to enforce our legal rights (including those of our affiliates and partners) or the rights, property or safety of our users or others.

  1. International Data Transfers

We are headquartered in the United States and many of our service providers and partners are located there or in other countries outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland. This means that your personal data may be processed in countries whose data-protection laws may not be equivalent to those in your home country.

Where the GDPR, UK GDPR or similar laws apply, we will ensure that any such international transfers are made in compliance with applicable legal requirements. This may include:

– Transferring personal data to countries that have been recognized as providing an adequate level of protection by the European Commission or UK authorities; and/or

– Using standard contractual clauses or other appropriate safeguards approved by the European Commission or UK authorities.

You can contact us using the details provided in the “Contact Us” section if you would like more information about the safeguards we use for international data transfers.

  1. Security

The security of all personally identifiable information associated with users of this site is of great concern to us. We implement a variety of technical and organizational security measures designed to maintain the safety of your personal information and protect it against accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorized disclosure or access.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority if you believe that we have not handled your personal data in accordance with applicable law. A list of EU supervisory authorities is available from the European Data Protection Board, and the UK supervisory authority is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Because people may have the same name, we will only provide or delete personal information associated with such specific email address. We will not delete personal information that we are required to retain under applicable law or that is related to an ongoing transaction (for example, if you still owe a debt to Trek Travel or Trek).

As noted above, the easiest way to stop receiving emails is to click “unsubscribe” at the bottom of any of our emails or to change your account preferences.

  1. Children’s Privacy

Privacy Policy

Your privacy on the Internet is important to Us. As a part of the operation of this site, We gather certain types of information about users. We want you to know the types of information We gather and what we do with it.

Information We Collect

We collect two general types of information from users: personal data (such as names and e-mail addresses); and aggregated data (such as information about traffic patterns on this site; for example, how many users log into this site on a daily basis).

Personal Data

Personal data is collected when users provide information to Us, for example in registering for electronic newsletters or other membership services, in answering surveys, registering to bid on items available at an online auction, and/or registering for contests and other promotional opportunities provided by Us. Personal data will also be collected when you purchase trips or related services on this site. When you register, request information or make purchases on this site, We generally need you to provide your name, e-mail address, mailing address, day phone number and credit card information (only when purchasing a trip or related services), as well as create a username and password. In addition, if you send Us personal correspondence, such as e-mails or letters, We may collect such information into a file specific to you. When you consent to provide your personal information to Us, that information is stored in the United States.

Aggregate and Usage Information

Aggregated information, such as which page users access and information volunteered by users, such as survey information and/or site registration information, is collected through various methods. In the course of using Our site, We also automatically track certain information about you. This information includes the URL that you just came from, which URL you next go to, what browser you are Using, and your IP address. An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer whenever you’re surfing the web. Web servers, the computers that “serve up” web pages, automatically identify your computer by its IP address, and when you request a page from Us, Our servers log your IP address. We do not link IP addresses to anything personally identifiable, so although your session will be logged, you will remain anonymous to Us.

Use of Cookies

This site also uses “cookies” to collect information. A cookie is a small data file that most major websites write to your hard drive for record keeping purposes when you visit them. Cookies allow Us to measure activity on the various areas of this site and to improve your user experience, for example by remembering your passwords and viewing preferences, thus allowing you to visit various parts of this site without re-registering. Most browsers are initially set to accept cookies. If you would prefer, you can set yours to refuse cookies or to alert you when cookies are being sent. However, it is possible that some parts of a site, such as a member-only area and shopping, contest and game areas, will not function properly if you do so.
